This forest was sponsored in 2007 by the Earth Ministries Group in St. Marks Episcopal Church in New Canaan, CT. It is part of a portfolio of small research forests to determine how much CO2 can be captured in reforested farm pastures. RTT designed this forest as a mixed-species forest mimicking the natural tropical forest, but with commercial species. The forest is managed by RTT for both farmer income (sustainability) and carbon capture and long-term storage.
This graph details the carbon sequestration and growth rate in the St. Mark’s forest. The total amount of CO2e stored in the 1 hectare forest in just 11 years is 265 metrics tonnes CO2e. The average annual sequestration is 24 MT CO2e/year.
